A Film: The Passion of Joan of Arc

The Passion of Joan of Arc  Wednesday, Nov. 20 | 6:45 p.m.  Broccoli Theater. Joan of Arc was burned as a heretic in 1431 and canonized as a saint in 1920. Released to critical acclaim in 1928, the Passion of Joan of Arc continues to occupy a significant place in the history of film. In 1982, American film critic, Pauline Kael wrote that Renée Jeanne Falconetti’s portrayal of Joan “may be the finest performance ever recorded in film.” The film offers insight into significant topics in the history of religion, attitudes related to women and gender, and the sometimes-close relationship between saint and heretic. This is the first in a series of religiously and theologically oriented films offered in the Department of Theological Studies.
