The Academy of Catholic Thought and Imagination, Marymount Institute, and the Bellarmine Forum welcome back Fr. Michael Engh, S.J., to present the history of the university's 50-year affiliation with the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary.
In 1967 Sr. Raymunde McKay, RSHM, President of Marymount College, located then in Palos Verdes, extended an invitation to Sr. Mary Felix Montgomery, CSJ, General Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, to join in their affiliation with Loyola University of Los Angeles. The following year, in 1968, the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange partnered in the governing and staffing of Marymount College as it affiliated with Loyola University and moved to Westchester. Fifty years after this milestone in the history of LMU, we pay tribute to the RSHM and their core values, which continue to animate the identity and mission of LMU today. A response and reflections will be offered by Dr. Lane Bove, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and member of the first Marymount College class to share the Westchester campus. An opportunity to view portraits of Marymount College past presidents will be available in conjunction with this event.
Keynote Speaker:
Fr. Michael Engh, SJ, currently serves as president of Santa Clara University. Prior to his appointment as president, Fr. Engh served as Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts and professor of history at LMU. A teacher and historian of the American West, Fr. Engh has published on the history of Los Angeles and the role of religion in the history of the American West. He was ordained a priest for the Society of Jesus in 1981. He holds a B.A. from Loyola University of Los Angeles, now Loyola Marymount University; an M.A. from Gonzaga University; a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley; and a Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
