Fr. Marty Ngo, S.J.

Fr. Martin “Marty” Ngo grew up in Orange County with his two younger sisters, the children of Vietnamese immigrant parents who insisted they speak their mother tongue at home lest they incur the generational wrath of their ancestors. As cradle Catholics, the three siblings dreaded going to Mass at all, let alone more than once a week, which makes it all the funnier that one of them became a priest. 

Marty began his professional journey as a computer science major at UC Irvine, eventually landing a corporate, tie-every-day job as a systems analyst in the Office of the City Clerk of Los Angeles. That is, until God decided to rewrite his code. His winding path toward the priesthood led him to discover a love for storytelling, earning a degree in production from Loyola University Chicago while honing his performing chops at The Second City. When asked how much longer God would like him to remain a Jesuit, the Holy Spirit’s answer has been remarkably consistent for the past 16 years: just a little longer.

Marty came to LMU in 2021 as a campus minister and now teaches Production in the School of Film & Television. As a filmmaker and producer for Loyola Productions, he is wrapping the second season of a micro-documentary series for Discerning Deacons. He will also finish his MFA in Screenwriting at Emerson College at the end of this academic year, God willing. On campus, he serves as Resident Minister in Del Rey North, program coordinator for the Arrupe Living & Learning Community, faculty adviser to Alpha Sigma Nu (the Jesuit Honor Society), and chaplain to Eleos, LMU’s newest student service organization.

Aside from Jesus, his sisters remain his greatest support. With a doctor, a compliance director, and a priest, they’re convinced they’re the setup to a very good joke.
