BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Fr. Brian M. Reedy, SJ
Clinical Assistant Professor of Philosophy

Fr. Brian Reedy grew up in Anaheim, California. Although he lived much of his life in exile from California, he is happy to have finally returned home. Fr. Reedy completed a BS in chemistry and theology at East Texas Baptist University in 1995. He continued his scientific training by earning an MS in chemistry and biophysics at Texas A&M University in 1999. Fr. Reedy entered the Society of Jesus at St. Charles College in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, in 2001. As part of his Jesuit formation, he completed an MA in philosophy with a specialization in ethics at Fordham University in 2006. He completed an MDiv and an STL in ethics at Boston College in 2012. Fr. Reedy then moved to Rome and completed his doctorate in ethics (moral theology) at Pontifical Gregorian University in 2018.

Fr. Reedy is a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy Chaplain Corps and currently serves as the Catholic chaplain for Naval Special Warfare. He has served on the USS Mount Whitney, USS New York, USS Ronald Reagan, USS Chancellorsville, and in assignments in California, Africa, Italy, Germany, Japan, France, Greece, and Croatia.

Fr. Reedy is the Deputy Spiritual Director and Content Director for the Moral Injury Team of the annual Warriors to Lourdes program sponsored by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA. He teaches Moral Injury Prevention for the Naval Special Warfare Leadership Education and Development Command, helping prepare leaders to navigate the ethical burdens of high-consequence service with integrity, clarity, and strength.

For the past decade, his research and pastoral work have focused on moral injury healing, including the recovery of medieval distinctions that illuminate differences between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and moral injury. In this work, he employs the principles of Stoic Philosophy, virtue theory, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to address healing, resilience, and ethical recovery. Over the past year, he has pioneered initiatives in moral injury prevention, emphasizing anticipatory formation prior to exposure to potentially morally injurious events.
