AJCU Leadership Institute
The Ignatian Leadership Seminar is an AJCU professional development program rooted in Ignatian leadership, pedagogy and spirituality. This year-long formational program (formerly known as the AJCU Leadership Institute) features monthly virtual sessions with leaders from across the AJCU network and a four-day in-person Summer Institute.
Through the Ignatian Leadership Seminar, participants build a network of peers in leadership positions across the AJCU network; gain a foundation in Jesuit higher education and spirituality; and learn how to apply Ignatian leadership principles to today’s challenges. The program is designed for administrators and faculty who are either new to Jesuit higher education or have recently assumed new leadership responsibilities. Participants must be nominated by their presidents or mission officers.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Monthly Virtual Sessions with Leaders in Jesuit Higher Education
Eight remote session held on the first Tuesday of each month. These sessions begin in October and conclude in May, and are led by subject matter experts from across the AJCU network. Over the course of eight months, participants are introduced to the foundations of Jesuit education: Ignatian spirituality; the life of St. Ignatius of Loyola; the history of the Jesuits; and Ignatian pedagogy.
In-Person Summer Institute
In-person capstone experience structured around the Universal Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus and held each year at Loyola University Chicago during the first week in June. Over four days, participants engage with Seminar Faculty and each other as they apply Jesuit leadership principles to the pressing issues of higher education today.
PERSONAL & INSTITUTIONAL OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the Institute, participants will have:
- a grounding in the foundations of Jesuit higher education;
- a deepened sense of community;
- an understanding of the issues facing higher education;
- empowerment to enrich the Jesuit mission of their home institutions.
TIMELINE
- Timeline: Nominations for each year's cohort are typically due by early August
- Nominees: Participants must be nominated by their institutions’ presidents or mission officers. Past participants have included provosts, vice presidents, deans, program directors and faculty senate leaders. The Seminar welcomes participants from all backgrounds, cultures, faith traditions and beliefs.
- Tuition: Program tuition for the Ignatian Leadership Seminar is $3,500/participant, covering materials, expenses and accommodations related to the virtual sessions and in-person Summer Institute. Travel to the Summer Institute is not included and should be coordinated between the participant and their institution.
