Fr. Alex Llanera, SJ '08 is the Coordinator of Ignatian Programs for Christus Ministries, the US West Province ministry for young adults. Originally from Sacramento, he attended and graduated from Jesuit High School in 2005. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Loyola Marymount University and graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and Theological Studies with an Ethics minor in 2008. In the fall of that same year, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate and professed first vows in 2010.
Following the novitiate, he attended Saint Louis University and graduated in 2013 with an M.A. in Political Science focusing his thesis on the influence of religion in the U.S. Congress. For his regency assignment, he spent two years teaching at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco teaching courses in the American Politics, Liturgy and Worship, and Scripture Studies. After his high school work, he became the Coordinator for the Legal Services Department at Homeboy Industries. For his theological education, he was sent to Regis College in Toronto. In 2018, he graduated with a conjoined Bachelors in Sacred Theology from Regis College and a Master in Divinity from the University of Toronto. After his studies in Canada, he was sent to the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University and graduated with a Licentiate in Sacred Theology in 2020 in Systematic Theology writing on the ministry of reconciliation and its role in the priesthood of the Jesuits. He was ordained to the priesthood on November 24th, 2018 at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish in Sacramento.
