Baptism & Marriage

LMU's Sacred Heart Chapel exists as a Roman Catholic chapel for our LMU students during their years of study on the bluff. It is not a regular parish. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has authorized LMU to offer regular celebration of the Eucharist and Reconciliation/Penance in Sacred Heart Chapel.

All other sacraments celebrated for members of the LMU worshiping community (Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, etc.) require permission from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the approval of the Director of Campus Ministry. Permission is granted under very specific conditions and follows archdiocesan policies.

After graduation, LMU alumni are encouraged to join a parish and be actively involved in their parish community. These sacraments are most appropriately celebrated in a parish setting where the individual or family regularly worships.

Infant Baptism

The location for infant Baptism is the local parish church. The reason for this is that at Baptism the new born child is being welcomed into the Christian community and this is most appropriately done in the local parish community where the family regularly worships. We recommend this practice.

For further information, please contact Campus Minister, Jonas Bognar at Jonas.Bognar@lmu.edu.

Marriage

Full-time undergraduate, graduate and law students; faculty, and staff are eligible to be married in Sacred Heart Chapel.

Student/Alumni weddings are allowed as well but must occur no later than five years following graduation.

Reservations are not accepted more than twelve months prior to the wedding date. Below you will find the necessary materials for completing the steps to be married at Loyola Marymount. The Marriage Registration Packet should be completed on the computer and then printed, signed by all necessary parties, and returned.

Marriage Preparation sessions are required for engaged couples to assess their readiness for marriage and to assist them in understanding that marriage is a vocation, a covenant and a sacrament. Because the Chapel of the Sacred Heart is not a parish, Loyola Marymount does not provide a process for marriage preparation. Couples who decide to wed at Loyola Marymount are asked to go through the preparation process in their home parish. If that is not feasible, please contact Saint Anastasia Catholic Church in Westchester to obtain the required information and documentation for marriage preparation.
