At LMU we take pride in our outstanding academic programs and our newfound niche as the University of Silicon Beach.  But of course we also cherish our distinctive role as southern California’s Catholic, Jesuit-Marymount university.

As a Catholic university, we embrace the pursuit of truth in all its forms and share an intellectual tradition that is open to transcendent reality, promotes dialogue between reason and faith, and places a high premium on beauty and the creative arts.

Father Caro, Vice President of Mission and Ministry

As a Jesuit-Marymount university, we value the wisdom embedded in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola and understand ourselves as inheritors of a centuries-old pedagogical tradition that honors academic rigor, professional competence, the education of the whole person, and engagement with the wider culture.

We believe that our faith tradition, with roots in the Hebrew scriptures and Christian gospels, requires us to work for justice—ecological, economic, and social—in ways appropriate to a university and with respect for the dignity of all human beings, especially those living on the margins of society.

To encourage a deepened understanding and personal appropriation of LMU’s special character as a Catholic, Jesuit-Marymount university, the Office of Mission and Ministry was established more than 10 years ago.  Its many programs and initiatives are described elsewhere on this web page.  I hope that one or more will pique your curiosity!

Campus Ministry (with its outreach to students) and the Center for Ignatian Spitrituality (serving faculty and staff) report to the Office of Mission and Ministry.  In addition, the Marymount Institute for Faith, Culture, and the Arts and the CSJ Center for Reconciliation and Justice organize programs (and, in the case of the Marymount Institute, a publishing enterprise) that keep alive the spirit of LMU’s two women’s religious communities.

I invite you to learn more about the Office of Mission and Ministry and the programs we organize or coordinate in support of LMU’s identity and mission as a Catholic, Jesuit-Marymount university.  Contact us at 310.338-2987 or at the email address below.

Prayers and blessings,
